A funeral plan for yourself might seem a bit morbid, but as one agency explains, it can alleviate the stress put on your loved ones who may have to deal with a costly bill after you have gone.
The 50+ Later Life Planning Advice Centre specialises in providing funeral plans and advice for people who are predominantly over 50. But with the rising costs of living and the uncertainty of what will happen after Brexit, more and more younger people are taking out plans now to avoid higher costs when they are older.
Owner Peggy Parish, who first started the business in 2011, initially working in local markets and shopping malls before building up her business, and then opening the first shop in Cwmbran later that same year, now has four stores offering impartial advice, which are situated in Blackwood, Pontypool, Newport and Cwmbran.
Peggy and her team also have numerous pop-ups throughout the South Wales Valleys, either at weekly markets or within shopping centres and can be found at Merthyr Town centre on a Tuesday and Saturday, Abergavenny market on a Tuesday, and Ebbw Vale market on a Friday, to name but a few.
“Everyone is more than welcome to pop in and have a chat with a cup of tea,” Peggy told Voice.
“We’re here to offer our advice and to give people peace of mind, offering a variety of tailor-made packages to suit all needs and budgets, as funerals can be quite an expensive thing these days – and the costs are only going to go up in the decades to come.
“We work with the local funeral directors of the many towns and villages throughout the South Wales Valleys, offering funeral plans from Golden Charter, Golden Leaves and Dignity.
“We won’t try and sell you every add-on possible like the adverts on TV, we will show you every option that’s available and you choose what’s best for you and your family. There is no point in having a premium coffin if you decide to be cremated, but the option is there if you choose it.
“Plans start from as little as £1 a day and we sometimes give our customers a little piggy bank and tell them to put a pound in when they make their first cup of tea for the day. That way they’ve rented the kettle for the day, and after doing it for a month, they’ve saved the cost of their funeral plan. It’s as simple and easy as that when you think about it.
“Anyone can buy a plan for a loved one too, so if a family member wanted to take care of the cost for someone else, the option is available. I bought my husband his plan last Christmas! People may think it’s a little morbid, but death comes to us all unfortunately and having a plan takes the stress and worry about loved ones having to deal with a costly bill after you’re gone. This way, it’s all taken care of.”
