The West Usk Lighthouse was built in 1821 by Scottish architect, James Walker. It was his first venture, but he later went on to build another 21 lighthouses.
It served as a real lighthouse warning ships right up until 1922 when it was decommissioned. It became a private home shortly afterwards and during the Second World War the lighthouse was used as a lookout post.'
The Sheahan family bought the property in 1987, and it took the two years of hard work to make it habitable as the lighthouse was in disrepair.
In 1997 the lantern room was restored with a grant from the Wales Tourist Board and CADW– the lighthouse is now a Grade II listed building and is over 190 years old.
It has four unique bedrooms each with its own theme and decor, which are used for accommodation and are individually priced based on two people staying the night. Each overnight stay includes a full English reakfast with vegan and vegetarian options also available.
As well as being a great venue for a weekend getaway, the lighthouse is available to hold civil ceremonies.
Weddings can be held downstairs in the large dining room, which has a sea view as well as a landward view, with seating for 20 guests.
You can also have the ceremony in the slate bedded entrance hall for 10 people, with the spiral staircase as a backdrop.
As the lighthouse is a B&B, once a booking is made, the lighthouse will be entirely at your disposal for four hours on the day, usually between 12pm-4pm.
You may bring your own refreshments for afterwards.
The cost for the venue is from £450 (please ask for a quote as price varies depending on number of guests and day in which you have your wedding), plus the registrar’s fees, which will be paid directly to them when you book your date.
You will have access to the lantern room, the roof garden, the wedding room, and the garden where you can continue with your celebration afterwards – great for unique photo opportunities.
