North Street Bar and Grill is a fabulous new eatery located on, you’ve guessed it, North Street in Newport City Centre, which is run and owned by Craig Leith.
Craig has spent the past two decades in the kitchen perfecting his skill as a chef, first learning his craft at The Hilton on the Coldra Roundabout, then at the Celtic Manor, and he’s even cooked for medal winning athletes at the 2012 Olympics in London.
Craig is joined in the kitchen by his good friend and chef Cal, who he once worked with almost twenty years ago at the Hilton.
Now, people may recognise Craig, as he owns Ava’s – a popular street food truck that’s based at the Leeway Industrial Estate and also based within the kitchen of Llawern Golf Club as a franchise – offering a choice of handmade burgers, steaks and many other options from the grill.
His new venue offers a similar menu to Ava’s offering a choice of burgers, steaks, home made pies and fish dishes, not forgetting plenty of vegan vegetarian options to accommodate for all tastes and dietary needs.
Diners can take advantage of a two-courses for £12 meal deal, which changes its options on a weekly basis. When Voice visited, grilled pork chop, pan fried salmon, 6oz rump steak and chicken breast stuffed with cheese and leeks, with a white wine sauce were on the menu.
This fantastic, value-for-money offer is available all day, every day, you can choose a starter and a main or a main and a dessert, and if you have room left over after enjoying the first two courses, desserts are individually priced from £4.
Running alongside the meal deal menu are options from the grill, which includes a 10oz gammon steak, an 8oz ribeye, a handmade burger with bacon and cheese, as well as selection of dirty fries with a variety of toppings and sauces for £4.50.
Children are catered for too up to the age of 12, where they can choose either two courses for £7 or three courses for £9. There’s something for everyone!
Lunch is served from noon until 3pm, with evening service starting from 5pm until 9pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
Coming very soon will be a choice of handmade pizzas, which will be cooked to perfection in a purpose-built wood fire pizza oven. Keep your eyes peeled on the Facebook page for the latest updates and when this will be available.
Moving forward, Craig will also be launching a vegan and vegetarian menu very soon, which will also include pizzas options.
At the bar you’ll find Doombar on tap as well as a weekly changing guest ale, plus a large selection of gins and vodkas, along with all the usual suspects in the form of wines and spirits. Bottles of Prosecco and wine start for £13 and up.
As well as offering great food and drink, you can also enjoy the very best sporting action that Sky Sports has to offer, where every Wednesday evening you can watch the football with a burger and a pint for £8. So don’t miss out on the mid-week premier league matches this December and take advantage of this great deal.
Having only been opened for just little over a month, its Sunday lunch options are already proving to be a huge hit with people of Newport, and with a cost of just £13 for two-courses it has a very attractive price tag.
There’s a selection of roasts to choose from each week, including a 12 hour slow roasted beef brisket. Sunday lunches are also available for collection if you want to enjoy it in the comfort of your own home.
To celebrate Christmas, all throughout December you can sample dishes from a delightfully festive Xmas Menu, which is priced at £20 for three courses. North Street Bar & Grill was formerly known as Dutchy Jamaican Jerk Shack, and is located a short walk up the hill from the Queens Hotel.
If you haven’t already paid this wonderful new eatery a visit, make sure you give it a try this festive season, as Voice highly-recommends its amazing homemade burgers.
